Know Your Rights: Practical Knowledge for Criminalized Communities and Allies
Speakers: Alicia Sanchez Gill, Collective Action for Safe Spaces
Yveka Pierre, Esq., If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice
Kebé, If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice
As engaged members of communities, we have seen first hand what it looks like when people are first “othered” and subsequently criminalized. Though those in power frame criminalization as a response to “harmful conduct” we have seen that criminalization has been used as a sword in a false morality excursion instead of as a shield from injury or harm. Two groups specifically targeted are those who engage in sex work, and those who self manage their abortions, sharing the burden of criminalization for daring to own their bodies and their choices.
As members of these communities and allies (see; co-conspirators), it is important to 1. Know your rights and 2. Be empowered to safely activate those rights. A panel of legal experts, and community advocates will examine how these communities are criminalized, provide practical “Know your rights” information for those who may come into contact with law enforcement, and examine how allies can wield their power and privilege to change the legal landscape for those targeted for criminalization. Participants in this workshop will come away with a fuller understanding of how criminalization interferes with human rights, equipped with arguments to challenge laws and policies that marginalize their communities.
