Strategic Initiative: Enhancing Birth Options and Experiences

Advancing birth justice.

For If/When/How, birth justice is the notion that the dignified, self-determined experience of pregnancy and birth is of critical importance to achieving reproductive justice. Everyone should be able to seek the type of care at birth that meets their needs and affirms their human rights. The color of someone’s skin should not determine whether someone survives pregnancy and delivery. Geography must not determine access to the full range of options for prenatal care and delivery. And people’s ability to have a dignified birthing experience in which they are free to make decisions about their health care shouldn’t be dependent on their level of income. How people are treated as they bring children into the world is not only a legal issue, it’s a measure of our society.
